The JPO published the Annual Report 2025 in July this year. The key points are as follows:

• The number of patent applications filed in 2024 was 306,855, with a slight increase of 2.2% over that in 2023.
• The number of patent applications of AI-related inventions has been linearly increased from 1,362 in 2015 to 10,280 in 2022.
• The average FA (First Action) pendency and the total pendency from the filing to registration of patent applications were shortened in 2024, achieving 9.1 months and 13.0 months, respectively.
• The average allowance ratio of patent applications was 72.9%, with a slight decrease by 1.4% over that in 2023.
• The average success rate in Appeal against Examiner’s decision of rejection on patent applications in 2024 was 73%.
