The IP High Court released recent IP litigation statistics in Japan. Some key facts are below:
- In 2024, the number of new IP cases filed in district courts decreased by 15.8% from 2023 (down from 603 cases in 2023 to 508 cases in 2024)
- The average duration from filing to disposition for IP cases in district courts decreased slightly in 2024 (about 14.5 months on average).
- Winning rate of the patentee in patent infringement cases from 2015 to 2024: 21% (159 cases out of 759 cases).
- The number of cases in which the patentee was awarded damages of over 100-million-yen damages during the period from 2015 to 2024: 37 cases.
